Keep food costs low this summer

When it comes to creating a money management plan that allows consumers to cut living costs and save more money, many individuals focus on the big expenses. This includes slashing utilities, trying to cut housing costs and minimizing debt. These are great places to start and can lead to saving hundreds or thousands of dollars over the course of the year.

It’s easy to underestimate the savings consumers can save by cutting back. However, consider the money that can be banked by simple actions, such as brewing coffee at home rather than purchasing a cup at a local coffee shop each day. For example, consumers may spend between $15 to $20 per month by buying a container of coffee to brew at home, which may amount to roughly $240 per year. However, individuals who purchase a small $2 cup of coffee each work day will spend upwards of $480 per year – if they only purchase basic coffee once per day. This does not include the costs of lattes, cappuccinos and specialty drinks.

Consumers can also save a great deal of money on their produce costs by purchasing fresh fruits and vegetables when they are in season. Seasonal vegetables often go on sale and are also at their freshest and healthiest. During other periods of the year, it can be more cost-effective to purchase frozen produce to continue benefiting from the positive health effects without breaking the bank. It can also be more affordable for consumers to shop at local farm stands, where items are sold at a significantly discounted price.

Many individuals also fall into the common spending trap of utilizing coupons to buy items they don’t truly need. For example, many consumers give in to two for one deals, when they really only need one item. In addition, some also purchase items that they did not originally intend to purchase solely because they are on sale. Discounted or not, purchasing unnecessary items is still overspending. To combat these scenarios, shoppers can benefit from making a grocery list and only cutting out coupons for items on that list.

These simple habits can help individuals enhance their money management plan and save hundreds over the course of the year.
