Poor Money Habits That Could be Costing You Money

While everyone would like to have a perfect financial situation, there are numerous things that keep this from happening. Many aren’t in your control, but there are some bad money habits that you could change;

Carrying balances on your credit cards

One of the biggest mistakes people make with their money is carrying a balance on a credit card. This could lead to a significant amount of interest being accrued, which could result in you having a lot of credit card debt. Purchasing a $500 tablet on your credit card and putting off paying down the balance could result in that product actually costing you $1,000 or more. That said, you should avoid paying for anything on credit that you don’t have the means of paying off.

Emotional spending

Another poor money habit many people have is emotional spending. For example, you may use shopping to relieve stress or as entertainment. While doing this may seem harmless, it could be costing you some money. Excess spending could take away funds from other essential areas, such as rent or food, so you should do your best to avoid any emotional spending. If you need to relieve stress, go for a run and if you are bored, get together with some friends. Spending money doesn’t have to be the answer.

Not tracking your spending

In order to put yourself in the best financial position, it is important to track your spending. This allows you to know exactly where all of your money is going. It could also help you find any areas that you are overspending. By setting up a strict budget, you could put yourself on the road to success. There are many ways to do this, whether manually tracking it or using an online tool.

Avoiding emergency savings

To provide yourself with a sense of financial security, emergency savings are essential. One of the major poor money habits is skipping on this safety net. If you ever find yourself in a situation where you are faced with an unexpected expense, such as a trip to the emergency room or a car repair, emergency savings could help you avoid damaging your budget.

Anyone who finds themselves with one of these poor spending habits may want to consider seeking out financial counseling services to help get back on track.
