A few simple tips to save on last minute summer getaways

While many consumers may be budgeting for the fall as their children go back to school, there is still time to go on one last vacation before summer ends.

To save on a last-minute trip, there are numerous things people can do, such as avoiding travel insurance. Most booking services will offer this coverage, but most travelers already have certain protections in place. For example, existing car insurance may cover rental crashes and health insurance can cover medical emergencies.

People looking to save money on their hotel room may want to brush up on their negotiating skills. Perhaps the best plan of attack is to search travel websites for a lower rate than what was booked and call the hotel manager and see if they will refund the difference.

To cut down on the cost of airfare, it may be a good idea to take off from a smaller airport. While many areas have a large, centralized airport, there are often smaller ones within driving distance as well. For example, travelers in New York City may be able to save money by taking off from New Jersey.
