No sleep when you're stressed about debt

Stressed about Debt? Don’t Sleep on It.

Here’s why Sleep Awareness Week matters to Consolidated Credit.

Bet you didn’t know this is Sleep Awareness Week. Bet you didn’t know it’s promoted by a group called the National Sleep Foundation – which sounds like the least stressful place to work ever.

Sleep Awareness Week aims to convince Americans abut “the health benefits of sleep and its importance to safety and productivity,” which seems like an easy sell. Who hasn’t felt irritable and inefficient from a lack of sleep?

Consolidated Credit president Gary Herman sees a couple of similarities to Financial Literacy Month, which is just around the corner…

Both are obvious but difficult

Herman says he needs no convincing that Americans are sleep-deprived – he gets that way himself, with the demands of work and family. The problem is finding the time and making the commitment to get more sleep.

It’s the same with Financial Literacy Month, which returns in April.

“Consolidated Credit is one of the major promoters of Financial Literacy Month, and we never have a problem convincing Americans they need to learn more to save more,” Herman says. “But debt is the same as sleep deprivation – you know it’s a problem, but you just can’t find the time in your day to solve it.

Sleep and debt are related

While there are many causes of poor sleep – from medical conditions to a noisy neighborhood – the top cause is stress. And nothing causes stress like debt.

Debt stress can leave you exhausted

“When I talk with Consolidated Credit clients who have paid off $10,000 or $20,000 or even $50,000 in debt, they tell me how much better they feel, not just how much better their bank accounts are,” Herman says. “What I hear most is this: ‘Thank you, for the first time in years, I’m sleeping like a baby!’”

Herman says sleep problems are a big reason why people call Consolidated Credit in the first place. They know they have debt, and they know they need to conquer it. Yet the lack of sleep is sometimes what makes them finally pick up the phone.

“You can ignore debt for a while,” Herman says. “You can compartmentalize it, push it out of your mind. But when the stress of debt wakes you up in the middle of the night, and you start dragging at work and getting irritable at home, it invades every part of your life.”
