In just a few weeks the big bills will
start rolling in, reflecting all the spending you did over the holidays, plus other
stuff you owe. Suddenly you realize -- you're way over your head in debt and probably
need credit counseling.
But where do you start? Are all those television
ads promising "easy debt settlement" any good? There are about 2,500 credit agencies
out there, but how do you know the one you turn to is legit?
You're not alone. Consumer debt has more than doubled
in the past decade, to the tune of $1.98 trillion including credit cards and car loans, but not mortgages, according to the Federal Reserve. The average is $18,700
per U.S. household, yet the typical Joe and Jane know practically zip about credit
counseling.
These tips will help, say experts:
