Flexible Workplace Policies are Important to Employees

Eighty-nine percent of Americans believe employers should provide more flexible schedules to meet family demands.

Juggling family time and work time is a concern for most Americans. A startling 60 percent of working parents, and a whopping 70 percent of breadwinners (those who believe they are responsible for bringing home the majority of the bacon) agree that they don’t have enough face time with their families.

These stats come from The Harris Poll, which surveyed over 4,000 adults online in late May. But even in the face of this overwhelming data, Americans in general (67 percent) and, particularly, American workers (66 percent) think employers have improved in the area of providing workplace flexibility for family issues.

“Workplace flexibility has moved from a niche concern to a mainstream reality,” says Karen Kornbluh, Executive Vice President of External Affairs at Nielsen. “Men, women, parents, Millennials are all interested – if it makes business sense – and employers seem to be responding.”

Some more interesting results from this survey include:

  • Nearly half (49 percent) of working parents have skipped on a job they believed would interfere with family commitments.
  • More than half (57 percent) of single parents did skip on a job for the same reason.
  • Thirty-six percent of working parents think they were bypassed for a promotion, raise or another job because they required flexibility in the work place.

  • Fifty four percent of single parents believe they were bypassed for the same reason.

Gary Herman, President of Consolidated Credit, believes parents should take the time to talk to their kids about money, so they understand the enormous sacrifice it takes to raise a family.

”If you as a married or single parent have surrendered family time in order to make ends meet, why not share that with your kids. They need real-life examples of the trials and tribulations people go through to properly support a family. The cliché, money doesn’t grow on trees is a life lesson they must learn if they want to become financially responsible and successful.”
