Stop wasting money at restaurants – pack a lunch and take a walk after you’ve eaten
If you like going out to lunch during the work week, you better budget some more money – because 92 percent of restaurant chains plan on jacking up prices this year by an average of 1.8 percent. Last year, prices rose 1.65 percent. Or so claims a new survey conducted by restaurant supply chain co-op SpenDifference.
The most frequent hikes were on burgers and sandwiches, with 28 percent of chains reporting increases. Just under a quarter of the chains upped prices on soups and salads, with one in five increasing entrée prices – while also reducing the size of portions to keep prices down.
So what can you do besides go out to lunch and waste money? A new OfficeTeam survey offers five ideas:
- Take a real break. As much as possible, avoid doing work during your lunch break so you can use the time to truly relax and recharge.
- Bon appetit! Getting the proper nutrients will provide the energy you need to get through the rest of the day. You can do that more efficiently by packing your own lunch.
- Go ahead and take the time to savor your food. Get out. Step away from your desk to clear your mind and stretch your body. Take a walk outside.
- Don’t eat alone. Join coworkers in the break room. Your lunch break is a great opportunity to socialize with colleagues and make new networking connections.
- Check items off your list. Taking care of personal tasks during lunch can mean there’s less to worry about after work.
And it’s worth it to be as committed as possible. Consider if you make a commitment to take your lunch to work, but you allow for 2 lunches out every week. Well, at approximately $10 per lunch, that’s $20 per week – or $80 a month.”
That’s nearly a $1,000 per year that could be socked away for retirement. And with prices rising every year, workers can count on spending more when they frequent local restaurants for a bite to eat.
