The Great Recession was hard on a lot of people, but in 2008, Sarah divorced her husband, lost her family business, and was almost homeless – in New Hampshire, in the winter.
“I went through a divorce, and after that, I was a half million in debt,” Sarah says matter of factly. “And that wasn’t just from not being good with our money. We had a business that I took over, and it was in the middle of 2008, so it had a lot of financial problems. I just kept throwing good money after bad.”
Eventually, that led to Sarah refinancing her house. When that extra money ran out, she ran up her credit cards.
“I was trying to make it as a single parent with a daughter that was 9 at the time,” Sarah says. “It was causing me so much stress. I was losing sleep. I was worried all the time.”
She was left with no choice.
“The economy was really bad, so I sold the business – and walked away with literally nothing.”
Then it got worse.
Even a failing business owes taxes, and Sarah says, “I had the IRS showing up at my door. I had liens on my house. My house was almost in foreclosure. My daughter and I would’ve been on the streets for sure.”
She was down to making painful decisions, like “Do I buy groceries or do I pay the heat?”
Calling Consolidated Credit
Sarah finally called Consolidated Credit, but it took her a minute.
“I think people are afraid to reach out because it can be very shameful,” she says. “If I can encourage anyone, don’t be afraid – because there’s no shame in it. I think we’re just our own worst enemy.”
When she finally made that call, she says she made new best friends.
“That’s why Consolidated Credit is so great, because you don’t have to deal with the stress of calling the different credit card companies and figuring everything out on your own. They do that for you. It’s a big stress reliever.”
Today, Sarah has a real estate license and a new outlook on life. Her advice to anyone facing financial trouble? “I would say don’t wait. Call Consolidated.”
