"A woman has to be more fashion-conscious than a male counterpart to make an impression," says Howard Dvorkin, who heads the Florida non-profit.
"A guy getting out of college can buy two or three suits and get away with it."
Indeed, the Bureau of Labor Statistics says that single women under 25 spend 55% more on apparel and personal-care items than men the same age do.
Dvorkin says women are generally better able to cope with debt: "Women see a problem, know there's a problem and try to resolve that problem."
Men, meanwhile are more likely to default and file for bankruptcy - often out of misguided machismo. Instead of seeking credit counseling, Dvorkin says, "a man will beat his chest and go on to the next thing."
