Housing Affordability: The Last Bipartisan Agreement?

Written by:
Director of Housing Counseling & Community Outreach

I’m happy when pollsters and researchers confirm what I’ve already known for a long time.

As Consolidated Credit’s housing director for the past five years, I can tell you that no issue unites Americans quite like housing affordability. When our counselors meet our clients for the first time, it doesn’t matter what their backgrounds are. They just want to get into a home and build a new life.

So this new survey from real estate firm Redfin didn’t surprise me at all…

Most Republicans and Democrats believe there should be federal policies in place to make housing more affordable, according to a recent Redfin survey.  For instance, 85% of Democrats say there should be first-time buyer tax breaks, and so do 77% of Republicans.

Those tax breaks are one of three areas where both party members overwhelmingly agree. The others…

  • “There should be policies that make homes more affordable.”
  • “There should be programs for down payment assistance.”
  • “There should be initiatives for building homes for low-income families.”

Interestingly, nonprofits like Consolidated Credit already work with the federal government to offer helpful services. Specifically, our Housing Counseling Services partner with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, better known as HUD.

We offer a free First-Time Homebuyers Workshop, free Foreclosure Prevention Counseling, and even counseling for renters. Of course, we can’t offer tax breaks or help build new homes, but we’re often the next best thing for struggling buyers and renters.

If you’re wondering why we offer so many free services, the reason is simple: Owning a home is much more than simply paying a mortgage. And that leads to a second Redfin survey that didn’t surprise me: nearly three-fourths (74%) of homeowners say, “My current home is a reflection of who I am.” It’s less than half (46%) for renters.

“For many homeowners, a home is more than a place to sleep and store belongings,” says Redfin Principal Economist Sheharyar Bokhari. “It’s a reflection of who they are. Homeownership can help people put down roots, build relationships, and create a space that feels uniquely their own. Those emotional benefits are a big reason why owning a home remains a cornerstone of the American Dream.”

I couldn’t have said it better, which is why I just quoted Sheharyar saying it. That’s why I often say that Consolidated Credit’s housing department is in the business of making dreams come true. And it doesn’t matter who you are.
