Rumors say iPhone 5 won’t support NFC credit card purchases
Rumors from England indicate that Apple’s iPhone 5, which many industry experts expect to come out in June or July, will not support mobile credit card payments with near-field communication technology, according to a report from Apple Insider. Originally, it was anticipated that global rollouts of both the iPhone 5 and iPad 2 would support this type of technology, but the latest iPad was released last week without the capability.
Apple’s refusal to include the technology stemmed from the lack of clear standards in the NFC payment realm, the report said. However, the computer giant does not rule out the technology’s inclusion in the iPhone 6, which is expected to be released in spring 2012.
As a result, it’s likely that the only mobile operating system that will support NFC purchases in 2011 is Google’s Android, though BlackBerry has also been mentioned by some as exploring the option as well.
