Protect Yourself From Credit Card Fraud

When using credit cards it is important to be vigilant to avoid fraud.

While you may not think you’ll be a victim of credit card fraud, as long as you are swiping your plastic there is a chance that it could happen. This could lead to your credit score taking a dive, as well as credit card debt building up.

Here some of the best methods to use to help prevent credit card fraud:

Only carry cards you will use

When leaving the house to go shopping, you should only bring the credit cards with you that you expect to use. This lowers the chances that you will lose a card and have someone else find it and use it to make purchases. You also need to be sure that all of the cards you bring out with you are secure. All it takes is losing one card to find yourself in a world of trouble.

Never give your information over the phone

One of the many ways identity thieves will target you is over the phone. In some cases, they could pose as bank representatives or debt collectors, so you’ll want to avoid giving out your information over the phone. This includes account numbers and your Social Security number. The only time you should ever give any personal information over the phone is if you made the call and you know the person on the other end is from a reputable business.

Shred all your documents with personal information

If you have yet to switch over to electronic billing, you need to make sure you shred all of your bank and credit card statements before throwing them out. Some identity thieves will go through your trash to find your personal information, so simply throwing them away is not always enough.

Create strong passwords for your online accounts

While online banking is a convenience for many people, it can also lead to identity theft. When creating an online account for your credit card, be sure to make a strong password. If it is too easy, identity thieves could find their way into your account.

Only shop online at secure retailers

Before making a purchase online, you should make sure the website is secure. If it is not, you could be putting your credit card information at risk by buying something. In the URL, you should see “https” instead of just “http”.
