Booking Early Saves Money on Holiday Travel

Timing is everything even when it comes to flying. According to a report by Travelocity, one of the world’s largest travel companies, the time you book your flight and the date you choose to travel, will determine whether you bleed your pocketbook or keep money in.

“Travelers should look to purchase Christmas airfare by November 12,” says the travel company. “Trends show a spike beginning around six weeks before Christmas day (around November 13). If travelers are not sure of their travel plans yet, data shows that there is usually a drop in fares three weeks before the holiday (around December 4 – 10) and then it will increase again.”

Travelocity says that flexibility with travel dates has the potential to save you additional money this winter holiday. And, if you expect that travel will be a high price item on your budget this year, a good way to offset the cost is by reducing the amount you spend on decorations and presents.

While historically the holidays are a prime season for heavy spending even on travel, Consolidated Credit says there are easy cost-cutting ways to make it home without going overboard.

  1. Use a prepaid credit card to book your flight. Having a prepaid credit card allows you to make online purchases and reservations just like you would with a credit card. The only difference is that since you are not borrowing against your credit line, you will be saving by not incurring interest or late fees. Additionally, because you can’t use the card if you don’t have available funds, it’s a great way to avert overspending.
  2. Pay off credit card immediately. There are many advantages to using a credit card. For instance some credit cards offer perks like cash back on purchases and frequent-flyer miles. When used responsibly they are great, but when they are abused you can end up paying large amounts in interests. If you decide to purchase your ticket with a credit card, be sure to pay it off as quickly as possible. That way, not only will you earn your rewards, you will also be saving by not having to pay additional fees that may incur.
