Atlanta homeowners gather trying to find debt help

Many homeowners are facing foreclosure, but an organization has been travelling the country trying to help people with debt management.

The Neighborhood Assistance Corporation of America (NACA) recently made a stop in Atlanta for five days in an effort to help locals restructure their mortgages. According to the Associated Press, about 25,000 people showed up at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta toward the end of the event.

One of those was Jason Brown, who got debt help from the event that amounted to reducing his monthly mortgage payment by $500. The relief was well worth the wait, Brown told the AP.

“I can sleep now,” Brown said. “I haven’t slept in two months.”

However, others didn’t feel as lucky as Brown. The report cited a number of people who attended the conference only to not get the help they needed. Darren Duarte, spokesman for the organization, told the AP that many people didn’t hear about the event until the last minute, which created a sudden influx of people who needed help.

The organization’s tour has stopped in a number of cities, including St. Louis, Chicago and Cleveland. Given recent foreclosure numbers from RealtyTrac, it’s no wonder people are looking for mortgage debt help. The firm has reported that foreclosures rose 7 percent in July.
